The Importance of Dog Shows

posted by admin

Dogs will be closely examined to see if they meet the standard set for its breed during dog shows, breed shows or conformation shows. These events are normally organized by kennel clubs and breed clubs. Specialty shows are events where only special breeds are examined.

The standards are set prior to the show by the judges of the show. Matching the set standards laid out for the show is an extremely tough task as the judgement is totally subjective. While comparing one dog with another, the dog is also compared to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. The dog show is organized to select a dog that fits almost completely the set breed standards, as the winner.

All the judges get together to frame the conformation point from the long list of breed standards. Although certain popular requirements form the basis of the judging, conformation points still differ from one competition to another. Although the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality are observed, in the final analysis the fur is still the most important factor. The distribution, quality and number of the markings will be carefully scrutinized by the judges.

The judges will also take into consideration a healthy pigmentation free skin and the shape and color of the head. For each breed of dogs, the general attitude and temperament are noted down. A beautiful jaw-line and perfect structure and alignment of the teeth when the jaw is closed will contribute greatly to the judges’ decision. The shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of ears, including the ratio of the length and height are carefully taken into consideration. Grooming the dog before a competition is necessary because observation will be made on the style of walking and gait and also on the shape of the tail and feet. The name of each participating dog and the name of the breeder’s kennel are registered to identify the participating dog.

For the purpose of identification the kennel club calls the dog by its registered name while the owner calls it by its call name. There are many dog shows conducted on various levels: there are local shows and national shows, which attract competitors from different parts of the country. Due to the hierarchical nature of the contest , dogs go through a series of elimination rounds before the finalists are ultimately judged to select a winner.

To ensure that the chosen champion is the best in the breed, these shows at the highest level only allow pets that have already won championships in other shows. It is only natural that the puppies of the champion dog breed fetch a high price because the shows help to boost the reputation of the dog, kennel and breeder. The popularity of the breed increases rapidly when people look around to buy a pet that resembles the champion. Crufts in the United Kingdom and the Westminster Kennel Club Show in the United States are two prestigious shows available.
